Okay so I’ve ordered a new bike! Exciting day I know. We all know the saying you always need a total of n+1 bikes in your garage. With n being the number you currently have. Well for me I got rid of one bike to get a new one. Blasphemy I know but hey I am married and some things need to give to stay as such!
I sold my Norco Threshold A3, this bike was intended as just an all around bike and an intro into Cyclocross. It was an Aluminum bike as i wanted something sturdy and not have to worry about. I loaded a child’s trailer to it to log her around and figured I’d fall much during cross. Truth though is that the little one never wanted to sit still very long in the trailer, she would much rather being riding herself. Then I didn’t really get a chance to do cross so I used the bike as my normal road bike. It was great but was heavy, felt sluggish and just not very responsive. I did do 8k+ feet of climbing on it throughout the Malibu mountains and all but did feel it needed more. Ran out of gears (different cassette would have helped that of course) but overall I did feel it was just a tad to big for me.
Once that bike was off to its new home I set up to get a good all around bike. After riding in the mountains and the descents I did decide I wanted a disc bike. The control I had on even a cable disc was very good and that made me really want a proper road disc bike. It’s the future and who am I to stop progress. I reviewed my options and was down to 2, the BMC RoadMachine 02 and the Canyon Ultimate SL Disc
I don’t like getting a top of the line bike because that leave out half the fun. I am going to want to upgrade, make the bike my own. So I tend to look at lower tiered bikes in the components etc so I can get the parts I want and really make it mine. In both bikes above I was looking at the 105 component flavors. The real goal would be to upgrade the group to SRAM eTap HRD once it’s released later this year. The Canyon is a great looking bike and not being offered in the US till later had me really wanting. The BMC is just a great looking bike as well, I know what they can do and haven’t been but down from them before.
In the end I chose the BMC, my local bike shop is a bunch of great guys and figured I’d support them as well. I placed my order for a BMC RoadMachine 02 105 wtih Velo Pacific in Long Beach CA. They guys over there are great and always super helpful, I have owned 4 other BMC’s over my time and I haven’t gone wrong with them. Now I am just in a waiting phase till it comes in and I can haves it! Then the list of upgrades will come. New bars, Group upgrade, power meter, wheels, other bits I can think of of course… but that’s in due time. Super excited and just love getting a new bike to hop on and get smiles after smiles. Full review of the bike to follow once I get my paws on it of course!
